So, what is you answer to that most frequently asked question –
“What do you do?”
Most of us will just give a job title, which doesn’t capture the attention of the listener or encourage productive dialogue.
Others will give such a complex answer using industry specific jargon that leaves their listeners baffled and not knowing what to ask or where to take the conversation next.
We so often assume that people will understand what we do by one of the above responses and most people don’t like to ask for clarification of your initial answer so you will end up having a meaningless conversation with no satisfactory outcome.
It is so much more effective to talk about the impact you have on your clients, the benefits you bring, the lasting effect of using your products or services.
We can all relate to benefits, we like good news, we can see where benefits could impact on us and our contacts.
Let me give you an example – one of my answers to the ‘what do you do question’ is -“I unlock the hidden potential in individuals and teams” – people always ask me how I do that and I can then talk about the impact of the profiling I offer and the team development days I run where everyone gets to understand the strengths and challenges of themselves and their colleagues and they can ensure they have the right people in the right roles doing the right things for all the right reasons. The result being happy, engaged, motivated people who value their differences and collaborate rather than competing and complaining.
How much more interesting is that than just saying I am a coach and a trainer?
So what are the benefits you offer?
What do your clients say after an experience with you?
What do their testimonials say?
Craft your answer to that ‘What do you do question’ keeping it simple, jargon free and benefit laden and just watch the impact it has on the conversations you have and ultimately the clients that are attracted to work with you.
“An uncomplicated message will stand out in the mind of your contacts and enable them to share your value with their network”
