Most of us are really uncomfortable with silence! We feel we have to fill every nano-second of a conversation and when we are listening to someone, if they pause to think, we rush in to finish their sentence, inject our ideas or ask another question.

When was the last time you were fully listened to without any interruption?

When was the last time you fully listened to someone else without question, comment or thinking what you were going to say next?

One of the greatest gifts we can give others is the gift of ‘Undiluted listening” – listening totally with no agenda of our own – listening to understand.

In the words of the great Steven Covey

“Seek first to understand and then to be understood”

It is when we are quiet and fully paying attention that people will open up and access deeper levels of their sub-conscious, They will talk about things they would not normally talk about because your lack of interruption is allowing them to follow their own train of thoughts and not yours.

By allowing this deeper level of conversation, you will leave people feeling valued, enlightened and enriched just by being in your presence. They will in turn value you, seek you out and want to spend more time with you because of the way you made them feel.

This is all about being totally ‘present’ and living in the ‘now’ where life becomes so much easier and more fulfilling as you savour every moment.

Practice being QUIET today and see what a difference it makes to everyone you interact with.

Remember –

“People may not remember what you said, they not remember what you did but they will always remember the way you made them feel”

Maya Angelou
